Perio Protect Therapy: A new way to treat Gum Disease.

Recent studies show that 8 out of 10 adults in the U.S. have some form of gum disease. This disease is referred to as the “hidden disease” and former Surgeon General, David Satcher referred to it as “the silent epidemic.” Signs of gum disease often don’t show until late in the stage of the disease because there is usually very little pain associated with it in the early stages. Just like tooth decay, gum disease (or periodontal disease) is caused by harmful bacteria that exist in communities below the gumline. These communities are called a biofilm and while this is removed by a hygienist at your dental cleanings, it is very hard to control between visits. If you have been diagnosed with gum disease these harmful bacteria are also entering your blood stream through small ulcerations in the gums (bleeding gums.) Research has established associations between oral bacteria and many systemic diseases including:

Many people are concerned about the treatment of gum disease because they have heard stories about painful “gum surgery.” There is now a painless, minimally invasive way to treat this problem. Perio Protect Therapy has been around for about six years and offers a gentle, yet effective way to fight harmful oral bacteria. Many patients who have avoided treatment in the past are changing the way they take care of their gums with Perio Protect Therapy.

Perio Protect Therapy consists of placing prescribed solutions into the periodontal pockets via a customized dental tray. These solutions chemically remove the biofilm and cleanse the small ulcerations that are caused by the bacteria. These trays are worn for a few minutes per day between your visits with your hygienist. We have seen wonderful results and tremendously improved pocket depths with routine use of Perio Protect Therapy. We use this therapy, combined with a series of “deep cleanings, as a treatment for moderate to advanced gum disease and also as a maintenance routine for our patients that are meticulous about their oral health.

In addition, because one of the solutions contains an oxidizing agent, our patients tell us they have whiter teeth and fresher breath!
